PARTY TIME

Sheila had never felt so exposed. She stood across from a pond being filled with a thick red liquid which looked and smelled like blood, and she had no clue as to why she was there. There were a lot of things that she couldn’t explain lately; sometimes everything she had done was crystal clear and at others it was like her mind was stuck in a permanent fog. Definite black spots, almost like someone or thing was slowly taking over her mind and actually becoming her, and she was only allowed to touch the real world for minute portions of time. She should be able to sense that, right? It was her body…wasn’t it?

When the girl at the plaza pulled out that white blade and started slashing people indiscriminately, Sheila thought for sure she would be arrested and sent to juvie, but it never happened. In fact, she remembered seeing the child again, though under different circumstances. It was another one of those memories currently within a fog yet always there at the back of her mind, just out of reach.

She didn’t know what was going on and, worse yet, she didn’t even want to know. All she wanted to do was curl up on her couch with Sonny, a book she had just started to really enjoy even though it wasn’t in her typical genre, and a glass of wine. She found it very hard to think about her family, even as she stared at them across the pond. They really weren’t family any more, though they shared a bloodline. Or maybe they were simply a part of a much larger family now? It all seemed so terribly wrong. She couldn’t even believe that it was her…that she had done it, but it was. That bastard deserved what she gave him, but did her son? To console herself, she convinced herself that he would have a much longer life now, and that he would succeed in his new capacity, but whether that a good thing or a curse, she didn’t know. Her road beyond Hell was a short one where she had no time for regret. But for her offspring…maybe it should have been different.

Sheila remembered the horror in their eyes and the taste of her own blood from the cheek that Tim had split. She was left within her own home, stymied as to what she should do next—until the dog arrived. it seemed like the dog could somehow make everything right. She knew that was ludicrous. But now they were here with her. She could see them standing as a family, as her family and partaking in the disgusting events of the ceremony, but she didn’t care. Finally, they backed her as a family should. It didn’t matter what they did or who they had become as long as they could be here with her for her big moment. She was thrilled to be here, though she didn’t know why she was here or what
